About the lamp

An exclusive standing lamp with unique functions and a seamless design. The legs are bent oak wood and the shade is made of porcelain.

Due totits construction you can easily change the amount of legs in order to change the aesthetics of the lamp.

Client: Maud Timmermans

Maud Timmermans is a ceramicist based in Rotterdam who mainly works with porcelain but also designs and makes furniture where she combines wood and ceramic

Our process

Challenge

Our project was to design and build a lamp that has wood and ceramic as its main materials. Due to their different properties, it was a challenge to combine these two materials without risking the lamp breaking or not functioning as planned.

Our goal was to design a lamp that includes unique features and functions that most lamps do not have. We wanted to create a lamp that is effortless and better to operate for the user. Although unique features were desired, it should still keep a seamless and clean design as well as be flexible in a way that reaches a wider customer base. In addition to all this, one of our main requirements was to use a limited amount of fasteners which also contributes to the seamless style.

Unique functions

The core

The core is what makes this lamp unique. It holds all aspects of the lamp together and it is hidden under the lampshade which results in a seamless design. It includes of a socket in the middle and six hinges with a dovetail end. The dovetail piece slides into the legs which are milled. This allows the user to easily take off the legs for transport, storage, or when changing the number of legs. The hinges make it possible to open up the lamp in order to safely lift out the shade when changing the bulb or moving the lamp.
